Colin Wood Biography

Colin is 37 years old, with just over 20 years of experience in theatre lighting.  Colin's interest in lighting began when he was just 15 years old, designing many school productions.  Two years later, he was offered the opportunity to become the Assistant Lighting Director at a beautifully equipped amateur theatre in his home town of Southport - a position never previously offered to someone so young.  After taking his A levels, Colin then took a gap year placement as a Theatre Technician at the Redgrave Theatre in Bristol.  Following his studies at university, he then accepted a position with P&O Cruises as Deputy Production Manager.  After three exciting years travelling all over the world Colin decided to leave to pursue a freelance career in Lighting Design, Programming and Production Electrics.

In 2004, having designed several cruise ship productions, Colin was delighted to be asked by the same producer of those shows to design the lighting for a production of Oliver! which was staged at the International Showroom in Kuala Lumpur.

The following year, Colin lit his first major production in the UK.  Santa Claus The Musical, starring Gary Wilmot and Anita Dobson.  This production ran for 6 weeks at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton and went on to have successful Christmas runs at the Liverpool Empire (2006), New Alexandra Theatre (2007) and the Grand Theatre, Singapore (2012).

Colin has gone on to design numerous plays, musicals, pantomimes, cruise productions and corporate arena shows all over the world.  A small selection of Colin's design credits include The Songbook of Judy Garland, UK Tour - Directed by Arlene Philips;  Jaguar Land Rover Long Service Awards (Production Show Lighting Designer), Ricoh Arena - Directed by Chris Manoe;  Hello Dolly, UK Tour - Directed by Chris Colby;  Annie, New Zealand Tour – Directed by Alan Cohen;  The Snow Gorilla, Rose Theatre Kingston - Directed by Roger Hannah;  Brief Lives, Mercury Theatre Colchester & UK Tour - Directed by Patrick Garland;  Triqueta, Guildford Cathedral - Directed by Jerry Robinson;  Peter Pan, Cliffs Pavilion Southend - Directed by Bob Tomson;  A Song At Twilight, Mercury Theatre Colchester & UK Tour - Directed by Nikolai Foster;  Round The Horne, Theatre Royal Brighton & UK Tour - Directed by Richard Baron;  Blues Brothers Party, UK Tour - Directed by Paul Tyrer.

Colin has a keen interest in giving opportunities to young people, and is very proud to be involved each year with the ATG Alexandra Theatre Stage Experience productions in Birmingham.  Past productions have included Annie, Footloose, 42nd Street, Grease and West Side Story.  Involving young performers and technicians up to the age of 24, these youth productions rival many professional equivalents and since they also allow Colin to spend a couple of weeks at home in Birmingham, are a highlight of the summer each year!

In addition to working as a lighting designer, Colin also looks after the UK training and support for the HOG 4 lighting consoles, working closely with High End Systems and ETC.  Colin also created all of the HOG 4 training videos for High End Systems which can be found on this website.
